Bonus List

COUNTRIES WITH THE GREATEST LONGITUDINAL RANGE BETWEEN THE FURTHEST WEST AND EAST POINTS

In the previous list, we had a list of countries with the greatest latitudinal (north-south) ranges in the world. Now, we will reverse it and show the greatest longitudinal (west-east) ranges. Instead of expressing this in number of miles or kilometers, this will be expressed in degrees of longitude (and as a percentage of the distance around the world).

The totals below include islands that are considered part of the country, such as Ilhas Martin Vaz, Brazil, the Aleutian Islands of the United States or Guadalupe of France (an overseas department), but not dependencies, such as American Samoa, Bermuda or the Antarctic Territories.

Not surprisingly, Russia, the country with the most land in the world, is number one, as it extends almost half way around the world (and across 11 time zones). Oddly, the country with the 24th smallest land area, Kiribati, is at number ten on this list because its islands extend across a sizable portion of the Pacific Ocean.
