LARGEST U.S. CITIES WITH A NATIVE-AMERICAN NAME
This is the second of several weeks in a row featuring non-English
language origins of U.S. cities. The United States features many
place names with names coming from the various Native American
languages, including large cities. Of the 50 largest cities, 10
have names with a Native American origin (including the "hybrid"
names like Minneapolis--"Minne" (Dakota Indian for water) and "Polis"
(Greek for city-state)--or Oklahoma City ("City" is, of course, English)).
