Bonus List

STATES WITH THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF WINS IN NCAA DIVISION-I MEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT GAMES (1939-2004)*

North Carolina is clearly a “basketball state,” with teams such as the University of North Carolina and Duke contributing many wins (and Wake Forest, North Carolina State and Charlotte providing additional “free throws” to boost the point tally).

Note that tournament games not only include the final championship games but also semi-finals, round-one games, etc.

* Not including “play-in” games into the field of 64 teams (2001-2003) or “third place” games (1939-1981). Includes wins that were later forfeited by the NCAA due to violations.

If these wins are calculated on a per-capita basis, Kansas is #1 among states (39 tournament wins per million people), just barely edging out Kentucky by a fraction of a game, though the District of Columbia has even more (55 per million people).
