ELMINA, GHANA
Elmina is a coastal town about 10 miles west of Cape Coast. The main site there is Elmina Castle (also known as St. George of the Mine Castle), which was built by the Portuguese in the late 1400s, and latest taken by the Dutch. Also, there's a crowded harbor in Elmina.
First, pics of the castle...
At the lower levels are dungeons where slaves were kept...
One of the cells from the outside...
A Portuguese church in the main courtyard...
An interior courtyard...
The governor's kitchen...
The top level of the castle...
Now for some views from the castle, including a small bay to the northeast...
Boats on the bay...
It appears this is not an American boat despite the flag (note there are clothes hanging to dry, so this is probably a residence as well)...
View to the west along the coast (and harbor)...
Looking down towards the bridge and harbor...
Looking towards Fort St. Jago on the hill...
Looking towards a neighborhood in Elmina (from the castle)...
In Elmina, someone was selling kenkeys, which are dumplings wrapped in leaves...
A typical street in Elmina...
A church further down that street...
A beachgoer just below the fort...
